My Family Portraits

Isn’t my family gorgeous, y’all? (As we are all native to California, I am the only one who has fully accepted the fact that I am a Dallas resident and now use the word y’all frequently). Now we are dispersed throughout Texas, California, Oregon and JAPAN. It’s a very rare and sweet time when we can all (or most of us) get together, so I wanted to gather everyone up for a quick portrait session so we could savor this precious time. We just wanted to take some relaxed family portraits that showcased who we are – nothing perfect, nothing too posed. Also, in our last family portrait I believe I have braces + am wearing clothes from a “punk phase” – so it was time ;)

My my aunt is a freelance writer, my dad is a small business owner, my uncle is freelancer, my grandmother was a photographer, and my sister is a model (don’t stand too close to me, please ;) ) and is also writing a book. Also, my hubby on the right is a software engineer – he’s such a rebel with his 8-5 job, isn’t he? I love how creative my family is, and how we can all bounce ideas of each other. My family is so great about encouraging one another on personal endeavors as well as the arts, and I’m so lucky for this. I can’t wait to see what the little ones grow up to do!

And this is my grandmother. She usually will not let me take a single photo of her, but today gave me 2-3 minutes. I’ll forever value these – remembering the experience of photographing her, once a photographer herself, and also cherishing the photos themselves.

Maddie + Caleb | Gorgeous Outdoor Wedding | Edmond, OK

Maddie and Caleb were married in a gorgeous backyard ceremony in Edmond, Oklahoma. The two of them are one of the most relaxed, easy going and fun couples I’ve photographed (which, in a bit, you’ll see why that was such a good thing!) When Maddie first booked with me, she had a venue in Oklahoma City booked. As the wedding planning became more and more involved, they both decided that the wedding was turning into something that just wasn’t them, so they change it to make it a true reflection of who they are. I LOVE that. I’m so in love with weddings that are a true representation of the couple, just like Maddie and Caleb’s. Their decor was amazing – from the wood alter Caleb built himself to the white pumpkins they decorated, which were a perfect and classy way to represent fall for their October wedding – everything turned out beautifully.

The weather started off perfectly cooperative. However, if you’ve ever been to Oklahoma, you know that things can change very quickly. Just in time for the reception, the bad weather started rolling in. The band wasn’t able to set up because of the weather, so they did their first dance to a solo guitar player. Soon after we were all huddled under the small cake tent, while it poured and hailed all around us. Throughout all of this, Maddie and Caleb were just laughing at the insanity of it all, making the most of it and still enjoying their day together. Maddie joked with me that everyone would remember their wedding because of the dents in their car ;) but I think we’ll all remember it because of their ability to make it a fun day full of love and laughter, no matter what happened. As soon as there was a break in the hail, everyone moved to the garage and The Wise Guys did an acoustic show right there. It was so fun and truly memorable! In the last half of this story, I’ll be showing a lot more black and white, photojournalistic style that I usually showcase – it just goes so well with the pace of this day and how it all played out!

This is proof that a backyward wedding can be personal as well as completely gorgeous – I loved the lights the strung everywhere!

At the last minute, they decided to do their first dance early because the skies looked a little gloomy. It was a good thing because a few minutes later…we were all taking cover..

But, in this case, taking cover just meant getting the party started earlier! The image of the right is one of my favorite reception photos of all time!

After the toasts, we were able to step outside for a minute! How FUN are they?!

Actually, how fun was everyone at the wedding?!

The Wise Guys were kind enough to stay and perform an acoustic show right in the garage!

Sam + Will | Rustic Outdoor Engagement Session | Pilot Point, TX

Sam and Will’s Engagement Session is one of my favorite portrait session I have ever done. Sam was my roommate in college for 3 years and a bridesmaid in my own wedding – it’s always such an honor to photograph the love of friends. I love living in the middle of Downtown Dallas, but the quite drive along rural roads to the meet up with them reminded me of how beautiful and peaceful living in the country is. We started off their session in Downtown Pilot Point and ended at Sam’s ranch house, where her mom made us some delicious homemade cookies and we talked for a couple of hours. Will is in the Army and lives in North Carolina, so I hadn’t been able to spend much time with him before. I left feeling so happy for Sam, knowing that she had found the perfect person for her. When I left their house, it was dark outside and I was shocked at how many stars we could see. Then, as I was attempting to navigate home on the country roads with the aid of street lights, I was reminded why electricity is a good thing ;)

I’ll try to resist commenting that all of them are my favorite ;) but I definitely love this photo of them laughing together on the hammock.

I love that will wore his military uniform for some of their engagement photos – the Army is such a big part of their lives!

Downtown Pilot Point has some interest wall murals, including two naked women that were created because some small-town protest. Although tempting, we decided to stick to he mural of the horse – classic country life!

Sam’s Ranch house was so gorgeous. I love finding locations significant to my couples to take their photos in – I think it makes them that much more meaningful!

yellow + grey is a classic Sam color combination :)

Nikkolette - Wow! Just amazing. You can just see the joy and light in my brother’s eyes. Sam stands out in the photos and Will is such a great compliment. The two together smiling, laughing, and just goofing off in general are simply precious moments caught in time.

Ellen + Tom | Vintage Outdoor Wedding | Tulsa, OK

I’m excited today to share with you Ellen and Tom‘s rustic outdoor wedding. After meeting while Ellen was studying abroad in London a couple of years ago, Ellen and Tom were finally married at the Post Oak Lodge in Tulsa, OK last September. It was an incredibley beautiful day and I heard so many of her guests commenting on how well Ellen decorated the venue and how much the wedding really represented them. Ellen and Tom both LOVE nature so we took as many portraits outdoors as possible, even though it was an especially hot day, especially for all the Londoners that were experiencing Oklahoma temperatures for the first time! I love the way everything turned out, but mostly I just love how happy they both were to finally be together. Ellen is a true vintage bride: her ring was found by Tom at a vintage shop in Europe, her linens and vases were sourced from resales shops in both Europe and America and her gorgeous Anthropologie BHLDN wedding dress fit perfectly with the rest of the day. The French Bouquet was the perfect florists for their wedding, perfectly capturing Ellen’s vintage vision and creating different centerpieces for each table!

Ellen had these robes custom made for her bridesmaids – so sweet!

As you may have guessed, weddings in America are much different than Weddings in the UK. You can’t get married outside there, and the concept of a first site is something completely foreign. Tom kept thinking I was tricking him and that Ellen was behind him all throughout our portrait session. I love the excitement in his face that she MIGHT be walking up behind him (even though she wasn’t – yet ;) )

Love the mismatched bridesmaid dresses – they worked so perfectly!

Love this one.

Ellen and Tom had guests from all over the world at their wedding – their guestbook was a map book that people could sign, so fitting!

Ellen helped both of the moms put their corsages on. I love sweet moments like this.

And this is why I suggest to do family portraits outside. And why I love to do them before the ceremony. We had time to capture extra moments like this – the moments I feel will mean the most as time goes on!

A girl after my own heart, Ellen had an actual CHEESE cake at her wedding!

After doing some American line dances, all the Europeans showed us this FUN dance!

Congrats again to Ellen + Tom! One day, if I’m lucky, I hope to visit you in England!

Something Old…Something Borrowed…Something Lovely

I love that every time Dina sees this image….she’ll think of the happiness of her
wedding day and she’ll think of her mom, whose jacket she borrowed for her gorgeous
December wedding. It may not mean so much now, but this is the type of photo that goes
up in value as the years go by. This simple photo is the kind of photo that makes me so
happy and proud to do what I do…it reminds me how worthwhile everything is.
